Why not belly dance in the library?

Here is my email address mtcoombs@mcarthur.lib. me.us.

There are probably some gasps out there. My email is readily available on the library website, so I am going to take my chances. Here’s the thing, I love libraries. Since 1993 I’ve spent most of my life in them surrounded by books and fantastic people. Aren’t I lucky? Well, citizens of Biddeford, you are too. McArthur Library exists for one main reason, to provide services to the community of Biddeford. And what a fantastic community.

Now I am going to tell you about four cool things that are coming up at your library. Please read to the end of the article, there is a method to my madness.

Free Film Friday. The last Friday of every month we will screen a film in the community room. We provide the popcorn, lemonade and film, all you have to do is show up. This month is a family friendly movie since the last Friday falls during school vacation week. It is one of my favorite movies. We can’t promote it too much because of the licensing rights, but I will give you a hint … let’s go fly a kite! Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.

Author Carl H. Johnson will be at the library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28 to discuss his book about the Boston Red Sox. The book is called “From Beards to Beer” and it discusses the 2011 through 2013 baseball season. You should definitely come if you would like to hear a man from Sanford talk about his book and baseball. I’ve spoken with him several times and he really loves baseball.

We are grateful to have lawyer Jennifer G. Hayden visit the library on May 1 for Maine Law Day. This is a fantastic statewide project that gives people access to legal information. Hayden focuses largely on Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 consumer bankruptcy cases, but also has a background on defense of the poor and disabled. Lawyers volunteer their time to present to groups or even meet individually with folks. Details about the project can be found at http://lawyersinlibraries.org/.

Last but not least we have Heather Powers here at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 to teach a belly dance workshop. The focus of the day is to have fun. The session will begin with a warm-up and cover many of the fundamentals of the dance, muscle isolations, posture, movement and more.

Program ideas come from all over. We have a great staff member who has recently been working to make our health collection a bit better. She asked “Can we hold a belly dance workshop in the library?” Why not belly dance in the library.

Thank you for reading to the end. Here’s why I included my email address – so you can send me YOUR ideas for programming. Biddeford, McArthur Library is your library. Whether it is belly dancing, concerts, birds or books, let me know how we can improve your life.

Events at the library are free and open to the public, so join us for these great programs or suggest new ones. Look for details of our next Lunch and Learn, Book Club or one of our many, many fantastic children’s programs.

Melanie Taylor Coombs is adult services supervisor/ librarian at McArthur Public Library on Main Street in Biddeford.
